May is Building Safety Month

May is Building Safety Month, and this year's theme is Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes. This correlates nicely with the adoption of the 2015 International Code Council (ICC) building-related, fire and property maintenance codes, with local amendments, the City adopted last January. With the exception of the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), these new codes will go into effect on May 1, 2015.

Building Safety Month is a month-long celebration that includes all aspects of
safety to help families, employers and leaders understand and appreciate the best
practices of building codes. At Development Services, we support this campaign to
bring awareness to the importance of building codes and to uphold our commitment
of keeping San Antonio safe.

In line with this year's theme, each week spotlights a specific area of building safety:

Week One / May 4-10, 2015 -  Don't Get Burned - Build to Code

Week Two / May 11-17, 2015 -  Bounce Back Faster from Disaster - Build to Code

Week Three / May 18-24, 2015 -  Water Safe, Water Smart - Build to Code

Week Four / May 25-31, 2015 - $ave Energy - Build to Code

This month marks the ICC's 35th year of Building Safety Month.

What is PCTAC?

PCTAC, is the acronym for Planning Commission Technical Advisory Committee,
and is often referred to as "TAC"; a subcommittee of the Planning Commission.
Its members include representatives from the Planning Commission, various other
boards and commissions, and members of the real estate/development community, engineering, architecture, planning and environmental professions, and community
at-large representatives, all appointed by the Planning Commission. The PCTAC
only meets as needed and is charged with making recommendations to the Planning Commission on Major Thoroughfare Plan amendments and Unified Development
Code (UDC) amendments submitted during the once every 5-year UDC update program.

This year, 2015, is a UDC update-program-year, so the PCTAC will begin meeting in
July to consider and make recommendations on UDC amendments submitted by
Boards, Commissions, agencies, citizens and City staff. Their meeting schedule
will be determined depending on number of amendment submittals received and
progress made. After the PCTAC completes their work around September or October,
the Planning and Zoning Commissions will also review the amendment package and
make recommendations to City Council for final consideration.

Congratulations to the newest PCTAC members recently appointed by the Planning Commission:
  • Susan Wright - Real Estate/Development
  • Bob Liesman - Engineering
  • Rob Leonhard - Engineering
  • George Weron - Engineering (alternate)
  • Jason Winn - Architect (alternate)
  • Grace Garza - Community at Large
  • Steven Grau - Community at Large
  • Phillip Manna - Community at Large
Also congratulations to recent Zoning Commission member appointees to the PCTAC:
  • Francine Romero
  • Orlando Salazar (alternate)
If you have any questions about the PCTAC or the UDC 5-Year Update Program, contact Tony Felts, Sr. Planner, at tony.felts@sanantonio.gov.
