January 8, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for attending and donating toys during our annual Holiday Gathering and Community Meeting last month. We could not be happier with the location, the turnout, or the giving spirit shown in our community. Your donations directly benefited foster families here in San Antonio, through A World For Children, a nonprofit located here in District 10.

We have some exciting news for you. Last month, the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, and Spurs Sports & Entertainment finalized the sale of Toyota Field. No General Fund dollars were allocated from the City's portion of the purchase. The City's funding stemmed from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund, which is funded by people who stay in hotels in San Antonio. Again, the City's portion was not paid with General Fund dollars. With a stadium like Toyota Field now in our roster, we are ahead of the competition for landing an MLS team here in San Antonio in the future.

In the meantime, Spurs Sports & Entertainment plans to operate a USL franchise in 2016 at Toyota Field. A team website has been established at USLSanAntonio.com. This is great news for the City, especially for District 10 residents and businesses.

Additionally, installation of signs will begin in January along Nacogdoches and Perrin Beitel marking the El Camino Real Trail as it winds through our district. Nacogdoches Road, through District 10 and beyond encompasses the original El Camino Real, which was used by very early settlers in Texas dating back to the 1600's to travel between various missions and other destinations. San Antonio is a city rich in history, and I am pleased to see our own district receive historical distinction. You can learn more about the El Camino Real by visiting the El Camino Real de Los Tejas website here. We will be announcing ribbon-cutting details as they are made available. You can follow our Facebook or Twitter accounts for updates.

Mark your calendars for two meetings that are coming up. The Northeast Neighborhood Alliance Meeting will be on January 25th, and the  District 10 Community Meeting will be on February 15th. Both meetings will be held at the Tool Yard. I challenge you to bring a neighbor to both of these meetings, and help spread the word.

I recently had an editorial published in the Express News, urging residents of San Antonio to join their neighborhood associations. There's a good chance that you are already involved in your neighborhood association, but is your neighbor? Help spread the word that neighborhood associations play a key role in maintaining our communities. Additionally, be sure to update your neighborhood association's officer list and contact information with the City here

Thank you for staying actively involved in our community and for allowing me to represent the best district in San Antonio.

Sincerely,

Mike Gallagher
City Councilman District 10

Christmas Tree Recycling Program

The City's Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) wants to remind San Antonio residents that this weekend 17 drop-off locations will be available for residents to recycle their live Christmas trees.

The locations will be open Jan. 9 and 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If a resident is unable to attend one of the sites during this allocated time, they may recycle their Christmas tree at the Bitters Brush Recycling Facility, 1800 Bitters Road, or the Nelson Gardens Brush Recycling Facility, 8963 Nelson Rd, through the end of January during their regular business hours.

SWMD reminds residents with a green organics cart that they may recycle the tree in the cart as long as it completely fits in the cart with the lid closed. In addition, SWMD encourages San Antonio residents to help keep our community clean by not illegally dumping trees before the sites open and not placing them at the curb.

For more information on the site locations, visit www.sanantonio.gov/swmd. You can also obtain information by calling 3-1-1.
