Dear
Neighbors,
Thank you to
all those who were able to attend last night's District 10
Community Meeting. We heard updates from TCI, Keep San Antonio
Beautiful, and The Children's Shelter, and answered questions from
the audience. If your neighborhood, business, school, or church is
interested in adopting a spot for a clean up three times a year,
please let our office know and we will help coordinate. For those
of you who wish to learn more about becoming a foster family
through the Children's Shelter, you can read more about it here.
If there is a
particular topic or city department you would like to know more
about, please let us know and we will work to schedule them in an
upcoming District 10 Community Meeting.
There is a
runoff primary election on May 24th, and there could be a ballot
for your area. Check your ballot and review your candidates here.
The recent
winners of the 2016 NEC Matching Grant Program have been announced.
I was so pleased with the amount of interest in this program this
year. We can expect to see several changes to these businesses in
the coming year as construction and landscaping begins. We have
included the list of winners in this newsletter.
I know it's
early, but National Night Out registration has begun. We encourage
our neighborhoods to register in advance in order to receive
updates and free supplies from various organizations. For more

We are coming
up on the 2017 Bond cycle and the city will be forming various
committees to review the proposed projects. If you are interested
in serving on a committee, let us know. If you resolved to get
involved this year, now is your chance.

Enhancement Matching Grant Program 2016 Recipients
The 2016 winners of the NEC
Enhancement Matching Grant program were announced at the quarterly
NEC Business Development Breakfast. Members of the Northeast Corridor
Business Alliance, local business owners, residents and City staff
met at Rod Robertson Auto Auction to congratulate the applicants and
review the winning properties.

Join the San Antonio Youth Commission!
SAYC is looking for talented,
dedicated, and responsible students to join for the upcoming school
year.
You will learn Leadership, College
and Career, and Service skills and represent your school and district
on this city-wide commission. You will participate in ten
meetings and five service events throughout the school year and make
friends from all over the city. This program is completely free.
To be chosen, you must reside in
the district for which you apply and show strong leadership skills.
Current HS Freshman and Sophomores are preferred.

Metro
Health Ramps Up Mosquito Abatement Program
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health
District (Metro Health) began its mosquito abatement program
throughout the city limits in early March.
The program entails treating pools
of water in public lands to prevent mosquitoes from hatching. Metro
Health conducts these abatement activities throughout the year,
ramping up efforts in the summer months. Metro Health has used this
method for years given that it is generally recognized as the best
mosquito-control method during the larvae stage versus the adult,
flying stage. It's easier and more effective to kill a mosquito
larvae rather than an adult mosquito. Larvaeciding is also the most
cost-effective option for eradicating mosquitoes. It also minimizes
the need for licensed pest control operators.
The process involves placing a
Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis (BTI) dunk in the pool of stagnant
water. It's that easy. The dunks are not harmful to fish, wildlife or
domestic animals and it has a 120-day residual to prevent
repopulation in that body of water.
Metro Health reserves the use of
spraying or fogging methods for areas with high mosquito density.
Community awareness is crucial in
helping reduce the mosquito population locally. The mosquito that
could transmit Zika, Chikungnuya or Dengue, known as Aedes aegypti is
known as a "container-breeding mosquito" because it likes
to lay eggs in water that collects or is stored in manmade
containers, such as tires, rain gutters, bird baths, plant pots, pet
bowls, neglected swimming pools, and uncovered boats.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes lay eggs
on the walls of water-filled containers. Eggs stick to containers
like glue and remain attached until they are scrubbed off. The eggs
can survive when they dry out-up to 8 months. When it rains or water
covers the eggs, they hatch and become adults in about a week. These
mosquitoes are also aggressive daytime biters.
For this reason, Metro Health asks for the community's
assistance in preventing mosquitoes in the area, including:
- Remove
standing water
- Keep
mosquitoes from laying eggs inside and outside of your home.
Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out
containers that hold water, such as:
o
Vases
o
Pet water bowls
o
Flowerpot saucers
o
Discarded tires
o
Buckets
o
Pool covers
o
Birdbaths
o
Trash cans
o
Rain barrels
These actions can help reduce the number of mosquitoes
around areas where people live.
Follow safe water storage tips
- If
water must be stored, tightly cover storage containers to
prevent mosquitoes from getting inside and laying eggs.
Improve sanitation
- When
water is contaminated with organic matter (for example, animal
waste, grasses, and leaves), the chances that mosquito larvae
will survive may increase because contaminated matter provides
food for larvae to eat.
Protect yourself
- Wear
long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks to protect exposed
skin during dusk and dawn, which is when mosquitoes are active.
- Avoid
use of perfumes and colognes when working outdoors
- Use
air conditioning or make sure there are screens on all doors and
windows to keep mosquitoes from entering the home.
- Use an
insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin on skin not
covered by clothing
- Choose
a repellent that provides protection for the amount of time that
you will be exposed. The more DEET or Picaridin a repellent
contains, the longer time it can protect you.
- Spray
insect repellent on the outside of your clothing (mosquitoes can
bite through thin clothing).
- Do not
spray insect repellent on skin that is under clothing.
- Insect
repellents should not be used on young infants
- Do not
spray aerosol or pump products in enclosed areas or directly on
your face. Do not allow insect repellent to contact your eyes or
mouth. Do not use repellents on cuts, wounds or irritated skin.
- If
working outdoors, use soap and water to wash skin and clothing
that has been treated with insect repellent.
