Their garden is a testament of neighbors coming together and building something useful for the entire community. We've featured their garden in this newsletter update, and want to commend all who helped in this endeavor.  Speaking of community improvements, City Council last week approved the building of a new playground at Lady Bird Johnson Park. The ordinance expands upon the original scope of the 2012-2017 Bond Project improvements to Lady Bird Johnson Park, which included entry and parking lot improvements, park lighting, additional parking at the pavilion, addition of a pool canopy and the construction of a dog park.  All of the previously-approved improvements have been constructed and have been made available for public use.  When a bond project runs under budget and is able to be expanded further, everyone wins.  We have a vacancy on the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee. PSA: Low Cost Spay and Neuter Available High Country Community Garden is Blossoming Last month, Johnson High School Art Club students volunteered to paint a new mural at the High Country Community Garden, as part of the Green Space Alliances initiative.   Their work is displayed on the new storage building and covering, completed by the UTSA Architecture Department's Class of 2017.  We commend the students and their sponsors, Stephanie Smith and Kim Rumfelt, for taking the time to add even more color to the community garden. We also want to thank Don and Anne Macaulay for their work over the years in helping the community and garden grow.  District 10 Honk 4 the Missing Contact: Natalie Vargas at nati1970@yahoo.com Public Meeting: Harry Wurzbach single point urban interchange (SPUI) project The City of San Antonio (CoSA), in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), will conduct a public meeting regarding the proposed construction of entrance and exit ramps and a single point urban interchange (SPUI) from Harry Wurzbach to Austin Highway in Bexar County, Texas.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at the St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3907 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX 78209. The meeting will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the formal presentation starting at 6:00 p.m. The presentation will run until 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by public questions and answers and an open house to review preliminary project details until 8:00 p.m. The purpose of the Public Meeting is to present the proposed project to the public and receive comments. The proposed project would construct four ramps from Harry Wurzbach to Austin Hwy. The project would also construct curbs, sidewalks, a shared-use path, and driveways. The project would involve roadway illumination, reconstruction and removal of driveways, traffic signal improvements, bridge widening, retaining walls, utility adjustments/relocations, and striping. The purpose of the proposed project is to enhance connectivity between Harry Wurzbach and Austin Highway. The proposed improvements would require right-of-way (ROW) acquisition, but would not involve any residential or commercial displacements. Maps showing the proposed project's location and geometric design will be available for viewing at the Public Meeting. This information will also be available for public inspection Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the City of San Antonio on the 5th floor of the City of San Antonio's Municipal Building located at 114 West Commerce, San Antonio, TX 78205. All interested citizens are invited to attend this public meeting. Written comments from the public regarding this project are requested and may be presented for a period of 10 calendar days following the meeting. Written comments may be submitted either in person or by mail to the City of Antonio, Richard Grochowski, Project Manager, P.O. Box 839966, San Antonio, TX 78283-3966. Written comments must be received by Friday, June 17, 2016 to be included in the Public Meeting Summary and Analysis Report. The Public Meeting will be conducted in English. Roof Repairs and Permits

Recent storms in San Antonio have caused considerable roof damage to many of our homes, leading to many re-roof projects.  Before you begin these repair projects, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

• Your roof contractor is required to obtain a City permit to re-cover or fully replace your roof.
• A drip edge is now required on all roofs per City Code. This will provide additional waterproofing protection for your home and roof. 

Why is it necessary to get a permit?

• To safeguard the safety of your family and ensure your project follows the City's building codes.
• To ensure that your home roof contractor is properly registered and licensed with the City of San Antonio, properly pulls City building permits and has passed the required criminal background check.
• It's the law.  Work without the proper permit can result in citations ranging from $300 to $1,000 to the contractor and/or homeowner.
• The City's Code Enforcement can issue a "Stop" work order to cease all work until a permit is issued causing an unnecessary delay to your repair project. A double fee penalty will also apply for starting the work before acquiring your permit.
• When selling your home, you generally need to show the work was done with the proper permit.

The cost of a home re-roof permit is $26.50 and is typically obtained directly by your roofing contractor. Visit the Residential Permitting site to learn more about permits.

Grow Over Graffiti Pilot Program

Free Trees! Trees planted in front of chronically tagged walls and fences have proven to be an effective tool in deterring graffiti. In partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, the City is giving FREE drought-tolerant trees to those meeting the application requirements.

Grow Over Graffiti is a pilot program in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department to provide trees to plant in front of chronically tagged walls of either residences or businesses. Applications will be accepted year-round for this pilot program, with a signed 3 year maintenance agreement. For more information, please call 210.207.5430 or email Lisa McKenzie.

IB 560 - Spanish Translation Services for Boards and Commissions, posted 3/18/16 The City of San Antonio Development Services Department contracts with an independent, third-party translation service to provide Spanish language translations for our Spanish-speaking customers. The service is available at the various Boards and Commissions managed by our department. The translation services are free of charge to our customers; however, the service must be requested 48 hours in advance. Note that IB 560 is also available in Spanish.   IB 101 - 2015 Residential Checklist and Application, posted 1/20/16 The IB was revised to consolidate all the information previously located in various documents in one place; this revision includes the required documents needed to comply with the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code.
