Dear
Neighbors,
We hope you
all had a wonderful and safe Fourth of July this past Monday. The
Fire Department indicated that they received 697 calls on the
fireworks hotline and responded to almost 30 fire- and
smoke-related emergency calls. This hotline was created as a public
service to dispatch emergency services to fireworks-related issues
during holidays, and I'm pleased to report that the majority of the
calls stemmed from the north-east side of town. Thank you all for
doing your part to keep our city safe.
National Night
Out is only a few months away, and neighborhoods all over the city
are registering. If your neighborhood has not yet registered,
please contact Jo Alexander, our District 10 Coordinator for
National Night Out. She can be reached at Jo.Alexander13318@att.net. We've also included in
this newsletter information about the 1st annual National Night Out
Safety Fair on July 16th, sponsored by SAPD. This event will be
held at SAPD headquarters and can connect you with various city,
county, state, and national groups dedicated to promoting public
safety.
We would like
to thank all the neighborhoods who sent representatives to
Neighborhood Day 2016. I was so pleased to see so many familiar faces
in the crowd. District 10 is known for being a district of strong
neighborhoods, and I hope other neighborhoods can learn from us and
develop their own network of community leaders.
As the summer
heats up, please be sure to check on your elderly neighbors. Heat
advisories are starting to become a daily occurrence, and our
seniors could be at risk for heat-related health issues. If you
know an elderly resident who could benefit from a box fan to help
beat the heat, tell them to call 211 and request to be included in
the Dial-A-Fan program. This program provides a free box fan to
seniors in our area and runs through September.

What
happens when a water main breaks?
Sometimes, Google can't tell us everything. Luckily,
SAWS has demystified the process of how they respond to a water main
break in an effort to educate the public on what to expect.
- SAWS
is notified of water main break (usually through residents
calling 704-7297), or any other method possible.
- SAWS
Emergency Operations Center dispatches service request
electronically to SAWS Coordinator.
- SAWS
Coordinator arrives on-site to investigate situation (typically
ASAP, but can be within 2 hours), confirms required equipment
and manpower, and calls-in locate requests to determine
conflicts with other utilities.
- If
work is determined to be an emergency (property damage or
significant health and safety impact), utility locates can be
expedited to occur within 2-4 hours. Non-emergency locates
can occur within 48 hours.
- SAWS
calls in or electronically submits the request for City permits
prior to starting construction.
- Requested
equipment is mobilized to location.
- If
needed, traffic control equipment is dispatched to site.
- SAWS
assesses situation to minimize number of properties impacted by
the pending shutdown. SAWS reviews electronic maps and
records of infrastructure to plan most effective shutdown and
backup valves (30 minutes).
- If
appropriate, SAWS may need to determine if area has active
dialysis or other activities which MUST be notified before water
service is terminated for repair work to be started (30
minutes).
- While
waiting for locates and other information, SAWS crews may begin
hand digging and operating valves to minimize property damage.
- After
locates are complete, SAWS crew begins excavation work and makes
repair (repair can be less than 4 hours, or considerably more
depending on size and complexity of job).
- Once
repair is made, excavation must be backfilled, wet spoils and
debris removed, and any required restoration (concrete or
asphalt) is scheduled for a later date.
To the extent possible, many of these tasks can run
concurrently. However, the time from initial report until the
leak is terminated can typically be 4 hours, and completion of the
repair with service restored can be 8 or more hours. Depending
on activity level when the main break occurs, this
"typical" time can be shorter or longer.

free "Flying Club" Seminar at Stinson Municipal Airport Saturday, July 30th from
