District 10 Update May 1, 2017

COMMUNITY NEWS Brought to you by Mike Gallagher, District 10                                                                                                May 1, 2017 Dear Neighbors,  Thank you to all who attended the Northeast Neighborhood Alliance Mayoral Candidate Forum. We had a chance to hear from several candidates running for mayor and I couldn't be more pleased with the turnout. Tomorrow is the last day to vote early for Mayor, Council, and the 2017 Bond. Avoid the lines on Saturday, May 6th, and vote at any early voting polling location near your work, home, or along your daily route. Mark your calendars for the District 10 Community Meeting on May 15th. This will be our final community meeting together, and I hope to see you all there.  The month of May marks Older Americans Month, Elder Abuse Prevention Month, and Senior Citizen's Caregivers Month. On Wednesday, May 3rd, we will be presenting three city proclamations to recognize these important areas. If you or someone you know is in need of access to senior services, have them contact the City's Department of Human Services or AACOG's Alamo Area Agency on Aging to be connected with city, county, or state resources  During City Council A-Session this week, we will be voting on a resolution to declare San Antonio a "Hidden Heroes" city. Hidden Heroes cities become a part a nationwide network of cities committed to unifying their existing support and resources, and adding others that are needed, in order to provide the critically needed support for their city's military and veteran caregivers. The goal is have the City rise embrace its military caregivers and offer them the recognition and support they deserve.  The goals of the campaign are to put into action the most effective locally relevant ways to identify military caregivers in their community, to continually update a register of those caregivers, and to bring together those organizations with programs already assisting military caregivers. Our vote will create a Steering Committee within the Commission of Veterans Affairs (VAC) to serve as a hub and organizing force for a city-wide effort to promote awareness and offer support and assistance to military caregivers and their families. We are Military City, USA, and it's important that as Council, we keep that fact in mind when making decisions for our city. During my tenure on Council, I worked with two other Councilmen with military service, and we often worked together to ensure that Washington D.C. knew that San Antonio is investing in the best infrastructure and resources to support our bases, our troops, and their families. Having a military voice on Council is critical to fight future base closures.
