District 10 Newsflash

Howdy Neighbors,
July sure did fly by, and I have enjoyed my time meeting with
many of you. We are always eager to hear your concerns for your
neighborhoods, District 10, and San Antonio as a whole. Council
sessions begin this week, so we ask that you stay involved and let us
know your thoughts.
School is just around the corner, and we want to make sure
that the students of District 10 are prepared and excited to get back
in the classroom. We are hosting a Back to School Bash here in
District 10 and would love your participation. Join us with your
families on August 12th at Toyota Field from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for
some back to school fun. We have partnered with several San Antonio
organizations to ensure that your child goes back to school,
prepared to learn. A flyer is attached below for your reference. We
are actively seeking volunteers for this event, so if you'd like to
help distribute backpacks and supplies, please email our office at district10@sanantonio.gov.
As some of you may know, it is budget season for the City. The
draft recommended budget is scheduled to be released on August 10th.
The City is looking at hosting budget open houses in the various
districts, and for District 10, the open house is scheduled for
Monday, August 21st. So, our regularly scheduled Community Meeting on
August 21st will now serve as District 10's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget
Open House. Staff will send a special Newsflash with the recommended
budget for your reference. Please come to this meeting prepared with
any questions that you may have in regards to the budget. It is my
goal to understand District 10's budget priorities so I can make well
informed choices.
In our last Newsflash, we asked you all to participate in a
survey to help us better understand your perspective in regards to
two Council Consideration Requests. These CCRs were for a
Pride-themed crosswalk and for the removal and relocation of the
Confederate Soldier Memorial statue in Travis Park. This survey is still
open for responses. If you haven't taken it and have an opinion on
these issues, please participate. If you have taken the survey,
please share with others who live in District 10. We truly value your
input on these items, and we invite you to send feedback to us: Click

As a reminder, National Night Out is quickly approaching. If
your neighborhood has not yet registered a NNO party, we've included
the registration information in this newsletter. If you would like
our office to attend your party, please send your request in advance
to District10@sanantonio.gov.
We aim to attend as many parties as we can.

Hilton Head Project Update
Updates for the week of July 24th - July 28th, 2017

The City of San Antonio takes the safety of the traveling
public seriously including all pedestrian traffic. Please help us by
informing all residents that at times there will be sidewalk closures
along the project limits. The contractor is required to provide a new
route for ALL PEDESTRIANS as needed. Remind your neighbors to stay
clear of all equipment, read all signs, and stay clear and outside of
the construction zones while walking along the project limits.

Stage 1 water restrictions began on Friday,
July 14th and are still in place. Watering with an irrigation system
is only allowed once a week before 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m. and is
determined by the last digit of your address. The schedule is as
follows: Addresses ending in a -0 or 1 can water on Monday, 2 or 3 on
Tuesday, 4 or 5 on Wednesday, 6 or 7 on Thursday, 8 or 9 on Friday.
Hand watering is allowed at any time.

National night out is a community outreach
program intended to bring community and police together on the first in October to create awareness
to crime and drug use in our city. NNO encourages neighbors to come
out and meet one another. Many neighborhoods, homeowners
associations, schools, churches, apartments, and community centers
plan a collaborative event for their communities.
Reach out to your neighborhood leaders and get

Metro Health Partners with Parks &
Recreation Department to
Offer Vaccines to Summer Camp
Participants Before School Starts
This summer, instead of waiting for hours in
line, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is
helping by bringing the vaccines where the children are.
In partnership with the Parks and Recreation
Summer Youth Program, Metro Health will visit sites throughout June
and July and vaccinate kids who are in need of vaccines before they
start school. This effort will assist parents by not having to battle
the back-to-school crowds.
Children between 11-12 years old are required
to get their booster vaccinations before being allowed to start
school. Metro Health will be offering the required vaccinations,
including Tdap, which protects against Tetanus, Diphteria and
Pertussis; as well as the HPV vaccine to guard against the Human
Papilloma Virus; and the meningitis vaccine.
Parents
will be able to choose which vaccines they want their children to
receive. However, the Tdap and Meningitis vaccines are required for
school entry. The vaccines will be offered at no-cost to the children
and their families.

San Antonio Parks and Recreation Will Serve Up Good
Nutrition For Local Children This Summer
This summer the Parks and Recreation Department
will connect children 18 years old and younger with healthy Summer
Food Service Program (SFSP) meals at no cost to the child. SFSP is a
U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition program administered in the
Lone Star State by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). For the
children who rely on school meals during the academic year, these
meals offer a source of good nutrition when school is out for the
long summer vacation.
The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department
is partnering with TDA to serve meals across Texas. Families are
encouraged to use these three tools to find a meal site anywhere in
the state:

Organizations partner with TDA to serve meals
in areas where more than 50 percent of children are eligible for free
or reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Eligible
sponsoring organizations include schools, faith-based groups,
nonprofit summer camps, government agencies and other tax-exempt
organizations. All meal sites must be sponsored by an organization
that has a contract with TDA.

succeed by providing the nourishment they need to return to school in

Educational Series with Aspergers101 to Take
Place at San Antonio Public Library
Summer
series focuses on understanding and excelling with high-functioning
autism and Asperger Syndrome
The San
Antonio Public Library and Aspergers101 are hosting an educational
series taking place this summer that focuses on understanding and
excelling with high-functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome. The
series is presented by Jennifer Allen, Founder and CEO of
Aspergers101. Each program will be held at Central Library on the
second Tuesday of every month through August from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
They will also be live-streamed via Sinclair Broadcasting at
News4SA.com/Live/Event and shared remotely at six participating
Library locations: Cortez, Parman, Cody, Mission, Potranco, and
Guerra branch libraries.
Independent
Living - August 8, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - Discover helpful tools
that assist with independent living. Discuss life after high school
including driving and transportation, choices for higher
education, employment, and living options. Special guests: Julie Coy
Manier & Grant Manier, authors of Different is More.
