Howdy Neighbors,
The Northeast Neighborhood Alliance's next
meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 16th, 7 p.m. at the Tool Yard (10303 Tool Yard). Topics
will include proposed changes to our City Charter, National Night
Out, the future of the San Antonio International Airport, and and
update from our office. Please come to the Northeast
Neighborhood Alliance's meeting if you are able. These issues will
impact District 10 and the City of San Antonio directly.
I hope that everyone has been enjoying the rain
that we've had recently. I know that my lawn is
rejoicing. Despite recent rainfall, SAWS has announced that
Stage 2 drought restrictions are still in place. Watering with an
irrigation system is only allowed once a week between 7-11 a.m.
or 7-11 p.m. and is determined by the last digit of your
address. The schedule is as follows: Addresses ending in a 0 or 1 can
water on Monday, 2 or 3 on Tuesday, 4 or 5 on Wednesday, 6 or 7 on
Thursday, 8 or 9 on Friday. Hand watering is allowed at any
time. For more information, click here.
Back to school is right around the corner and our
office wants to make sure that your kids have what they need to get
started. We are partnering with New Creation Christian Fellowship and
Commissioner Tommy Calvert's office to provide a FREE Back 2
School Prep Rally on August 18th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Morgan's Wonderland Event
Center. Backpacks, school supplies, health immunizations, haircuts,
and more will be provided free of cost. More information can be found
on a flyer below and online.
As always, thank you for being active community
members and leaders here in District 10, and do not hesitate to
contact our office if we can be of any assistance to you.

Thank You, Bexar County Sheriff's
Office!
Earlier this week, we partnered with the Bexar County
Sheriff's Office to bring the community a free Civilian Response to
Active Shooter Training session at the Thousand Oaks Branch Library. The response to this
event was overwhelming, with over 60 people in attendance. Thank you
to Deputy Blanz and all of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office for
working with us to schedule this event. We know that many of you were
not able to attend this training and are still interested. We will be
working with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office to schedule more
events like this in the future.

Did You Know?
Did you know that there are markers that
designate the path of the El Camino Real de los Tejas? These granite
markers are placed in five mile intervals along the El Camino Real as
a statewide project by the Daughters fo the American Revolution. Each
of these markers read: "Kings Highway, Camino Real, Old San
Antonio Road, Marked by the Daughters of the American Revolution and
the State of Texas, A.D. 1918".
The photo to the left was taken at the
intersection of Nacogdoches Rd/FM 2252 and Higgins Dr. The District
10 office is working closely with El Chaparral/Fertile Valley and
Pepperidge Neighborhood Associations to ensure that this monument is
protected.

Healthy Tips with Dr. Bridger
Got
Milk...or not Milk? Every
so often a new study about why milk either is great or terrible comes
out. I don't know about you, but I hate milk. Just the thought of it
sends shivers of nausea throughout my body. So, when the latest study
showed a dose-response relationship between milk and death, I was
thrilled to think I might actually have a legitimate reason not to
have to drink another glass of milk for the rest of my life. However,
because in my heart of hearts I will always and forever be a public
health research geek, I needed to completely understand this
research. So, I went to the original study to better understand the
results. That led me to wondering about other studies I might not
have seen, so I dug a little deeper.
I started by doing an Internet search for
articles containing both words milk and health. That search returned
over 10,000 research articles! So, then I looked at about 100 of
those articles in search of the ultimate review article
that summarized the results of the 10,000 studies for me. I found a
handful of such studies; however, I did not find my answers. It turns
out milk is a complicated beverage! Who knew?
Here's what I learned: First, most studies that
attempted to answer the question of whether milk is good or bad for
humans were poorly designed. They didn't ask the right questions, so
they didn't yield the kind of data I was looking for. Of the studies
that withstood the scientific rigor of the nation's milk experts, the
results were mixed and not at all conclusive. Some studies found milk
was good for your bones, your diet, your brain and if you're a woman,
good for reducing your symptoms of PMS. Other studies went the
opposite way, finding that milk was bad for your bones, bad for your
diet and bad for your heart. Still other studies found milk had
essentially no effect on your health.
At this point in my research I started thinking
instead about writing an article about the importance of
exercise...Now, I am not one of the nation's milk experts and I've
already admitted I'm not a big milk fan. So having put all my cards
on the table, I'd like to share my interpretation of the studies. Is
milk good or bad for you? It seems a little of both.
It's bad for you because dairy products are
generally high in fat. Many of the negatives associated with dairy
intake are really more about the fat intake than they are about the
dairy per se. But milk is good for you because the human body does
need calcium, and dairy is an excellent source. So what's a
person to do? There are a couple good compromises. Fortunately,
low-fat variations of most dairy products are readily available on
the market today. So, if you like milk, switch to skim and keep
drinking it. If you like the other dairy products, look for the
low-fat variety and the benefits will probably outweigh the risks.
Get some calcium every day, either through
other non-dairy foods like greens, almonds or canned fish or a
supplement. Of course the healthiest beverage in the world
is...WATER. Either way, make sure to get plenty of exercise. The
studies did agree on one thing: Exercise is the most effective way to
prevent osteoporosis, regardless of your calcium intake.
I'd love to spotlight some of your favorites.
