District 10 Newsflash
Brought to you by Clayton Perry, District 10

August 7, 2018
Howdy Neighbors,
Happy August, everyone - July sure did fly by! It
is my hope that you all have enjoyed the summer and have been taking
measures to ensure you stay cool. Council is officially back in
session, and I encourage you all to stay involved.
As some of you may know, it is budget season for
the City. The draft recommended budget for the 2019 Fiscal Year will
be presented to the Council on August 9th. The City is hosting
several budget open houses in various districts in the weeks to come.
District 10 will kickoff these community days on Thursday, August
16th at Morgan's Wonderland from 5:30
pm - 8:00 pm. This event is family friendly and will include free
food, entertainment, health screenings, and fun giveaways! Please
come to this meeting prepared with any questions that you may have in
regards to the budget. It is my goal to understand District 10's
budget priorities, so that I can make well-informed choices.
The next District 10 Community Meeting is
scheduled for Monday, August 20th, 7 pm at the Tool Yard (10303 Tool Yard). We'll
be joined at this meeting by Dr. Bridger, Director of Metro Health,
Transportation and Capital Improvements, and Everett Fly. Everett Fly
is a native of San Antonio who is known for his work preserving the
integrity of African-American places and landmarks. In 2014, Everett
Fly was awarded the Art Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama.
This will be Everett Fly's first time attending a District 10
Community Meeting, so be sure to give him a warm welcome.
It's almost time for back to
school and our office wants to make sure that your kids have what
they need to get started. We are partnering with New Creation
Christian Fellowship and Commissioner Tommy Calvert to provide
a FREE Back
2 School Prep Rally on August 18th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Morgan's Wonderland Event Center. Backpacks, school
supplies, health immunizations, haircuts, and more will be provided
free of cost. More information can be found on a flyer below and online.

place. Watering with an irrigation system is only allowed once a week
between 7-11 a.m. or 7-11 p.m. and is determined by the last
digit of your address. The schedule is as follows: Addresses ending
in a 0 or 1 can water on Monday, 2 or 3 on Tuesday, 4 or 5 on
Wednesday, 6 or 7 on Thursday, 8 or 9 on Friday. Hand watering is
allowed at any time. For more information, click here.
As always, thank you for being active community
members and leaders here in District 10, and do not hesitate to
contact our office if we can be of any assistance to you.

Public Hearing - Paid Sick Leave
On
Thursday, August 3rd, the City Clerk's office verified that
supporters of mandatory sick leave gathered enough valid signatures
to compel a vote from City Council to either adopt an ordinance
enforcing paid sick leave or to send this item to a ballot.
This policy would require that employee's working
in San Antonio's private sector earn paid sick leave. If adopted, the
ordinance would require that employees earn an hour of sick leave for
every 30 hours or work and could accrue a minimum of 48 hours for businesses
with 15 or fewer employees and 60 hours for business with more than
15 employees.
A public hearing will be held on Wednesday, August 8th, at
6:00 pm in the City Council Chambers to gather input on the proposed
sick leave ordinance. We would like to hear from District 10 on this
matter. If you are not able to make it to this public hearing, we
encourage you to voice your opinion by contacting our office at district10@sanantonio.gov.

Big Thanks to IASA
Over
the weekend, the India Association of San Antonio hosted a free
medical camp for the community surrounding Serna Elementary School.
This medical camp was open to all ages and
provided free consultations from physicians, specialists, nurses, and
other care providers. In addition to the free medical camp, IASA also
supplied book bags, school supplies, clothes, bike helmets and
breakfast - all free of charge. In the year of our Tricentennial,
IASA was proud to start this annual camp and serve the communities
around San Antonio.
I extend my deepest gratitude to this group for
taking initiative and serving our community right here in District
10.

300for300 Pollinator Project
In April, the Texas Butterfly Ranch
announced a plan to create 300 new pollinator garden habitats for San
Antonio's 300th birthday. Since, they have been working with
community collaborators to reach their 300 garden goal in this
Tricentennial year by October 21, when they stage their 2018 Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival.

Education Nights at The Public
are an exclusive performance for youth, ages 12-18, to attend a production
in the Russell Hill Rogers Theater at The San Pedro Playhouse. These
performances provide access to educational learning experiences in
the creative arts and live theater. Also, performances foster
positive youth development and individual personal growth through
increased self-expression, social engagement and exposure to
potential career opportunities. Education nights are made possible
through the generosity of foundations and corporations.
