October 23, 2020

Howdy Neighbors,

We hosted our monthly virtual District 10 Community Meeting on Monday, October 19. We were be joined by CPS Energy CEO, Paula Gold-Williams, City of San Antonio's Aviation Director, Jesus Saenz, and Impact San Antonio's President, Jennifer Bennet, and Co-Chair of Grant Oversight and Outcomes, Audrey Laird. Thank you to everyone who participated in this meeting - we appreciate you standing by us as we navigate this virtual world. If you were unable to participate in the meeting, you may view a recording here. In the description, we've also included the questions that were asked by y'all and answered by our presenters.

As many of you know, there is a very important election on November 3, for issues that will have an impact both nationally and locally. Early voting began on Tuesday, October 13 and ends on Friday, October 30. Again, election day is Tuesday, November 3. If you are planning to vote by mail, please do so as early as possible to give your ballot ample time to be counted. To view a sample ballot and voters' guide, please go to vote411.org. There you will find a non-partisan pro/con guide to each candidate and proposition. All election related questions can be directed to the Bexar County Elections Office at 210-335-8683 or 210-335-0362.

I know many of you are curious about how we'll be handling Halloween in the midst of this pandemic. I'm glad to share that Halloween is not cancelled! The City of San Antonio has shared guidelines on how to safely celebrate this year. For this year's suggested guidelines, click here.

As always, thank you for being active community members and leaders here in District 10. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if we can be of any assistance to you. The District 10 team is still on hand and available to address your needs and concerns throughout this time.

People + Place = Vacant Building Program (Virtual Conversation)

The Office of Historic Preservation is hosting a series of virtual conversations to educate San Antonio property owners about the potential pitfalls that can lead to vacancy. The first conversation is entitled People + Place = Vacant Building Program and features an in-depth look at the people-centered approach of the Vacant Building Program (VBP). The discussion happens on Thursday, November 5th at 5:00pm and registration information can be found at http://tiny.cc/vpbwebex.

This in-depth conversation will cover the purpose of the program, where it applies, how it is structured, and how it is executed. Additionally, the discussion will communicate the enforcement actions associated with non-compliance and advice for owners on how to stay in compliance. Attendees are encouraged to submit questions before and during the session for VBP staff to address.

The VBP covers nearly 25% of San Antonio and works in support of other previously-established areas like Neighborhood Conservation Districts and City-initiated Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones—the VBP is not only in historic districts.

The main audience is individuals that are owners of single-family properties—whether vacant or occupied. We want vacant property owners to understand their obligation under the program, how to be exempt from the program, and neighbors of vacant properties to understand the holistic approach we take and our goal of helping to strengthen San Antonio neighborhoods.

Community Spotlight

These neighbors came together and used Nextdoor for good! Neighbors from Wilshire Terrace, Oak Park Northwood, East Terrell Hills and more came together to collect garbage between Harry Wurzbach and Eisenhauer and Corrine - clearing parts of both District 10 and District 2 - over the last six weeks. All told they've put in over fifty hours of work and collected one hundred twenty bags of garbage. Thank you, neighbors!

Community Spotlight

The El Dorado Community Garden is in full swing! July was a busy month for El Dorado Community Garden. They received pallet donations from another District 10 Neighbor, High Country Community Garden, and their watermelons are ready and producing more and more! They have generously been sharing the produce with neighbors and volunteers. At the moment they are preparing the compost area for their new compost section. We can't wait to see how much you all grow.

Thank you to the Green Spaces Alliance for sharing this update!
