District 10 Update 14 April, 2017

COMMUNITY NEWS
Brought to you by Mike Gallagher, District 10

                                                                                               April 14th, 2017

The countdown to elections has officially begun and we are less than a month away. I encourage you all to join us on Monday evening for the Mayoral Candidate Forum hosted by the Northeast Neighborhood Alliance. Meet and greets will begin at 6:15 PM and the forum will kick off at 6:50 PM. Once again, we will be at the Tool Yard off of Wurzbach Parkway. For a full listing of all candidates, please visit http://www.sanantonio.gov/candidate-listing.

In addition to elected officials, there is another ballot item that I must stress its importance: the 2017 Bond package. With the funding of each proposition, major improvements will be made in our communities and for San Antonio. Please spend some time over the next few weeks discussing those six propositions with friends and family, and getting informed before you arrive at the polling sites. No Bond package will ever be perfect, but this one specifically is monumental to instituting real change and implementing true growth for our great city. It deserves our full support.

Many of you may have seen press coverage over the past two days regarding the Google Fiber hut at Haskin Park, and its now-pending removal. My goal since we began this journey over the summer has been to work towards a solution that not only benefits the community around Haskin Park, but also the 40,000+ residents served by the accompanying fiber backbone. When the hut and its placement were originally deemed necessary, we worked tirelessly to mitigate its impact and took the opportunity to bring significant improvements to Haskin Park But it was our collective efforts with Mayor Taylor and Google Fiber over these last 10 months that spurred the advancing implementation of micro-trenching, changed the landscape and infrastructure for the distribution points of the fiber optic network, and resulted in us making our goal a reality I appreciate the vast array of feedback and patience while we worked day in and day out to create a fiber network that fits our community.

In other news, our residential short-term rental discussion is still in full swing. The next stakeholder discussion is scheduled for Monday, April 24 from 2-4 PM. The meeting will take place in the 1st floor Boardroom at the Development Services Department Building (1901 S. Alamo, 78204) and is open to the public. For more information, please visit http://www.sanantonio.gov/DSD/Resources/Codes#176642678-short-term-rental-ccr.

As my term as your City Councilman is coming to a close, I want to say thank you. Serving our community has been my immense honor and I deeply appreciate you placing your trust in me to protect the residents of District 10. I hope for progress and continuity as our District gains a new advocate on the dais. We invite you to join us in May for my last District 10 Community Meeting, and will be sending more information out with the date, time and location in the coming days.

Thank you for staying actively involved in our community and for your strong support of District 10.
