District 10 update 21 March, 2018

Howdy Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Northeast Neighborhood Alliance's meeting on Monday. We heard from TCI and Union Pacific on the proposed road closure at Old O'Connor Road and Lookout Road. There were several concerns on this matter, and I encourage you to contact my office at District10@SanAntonio.gov with your concerns so we can document them. We also heard an update from Spurs Sports and Entertainment representatives Tim Holt and Shermeka Hudson. San Antonio FC's home opener is this Saturday, March 24th, at 7:30 PM against the Saint Louis Football Club. Their facility is located right here in District 10, and this game would be a fantastic opportunity to support our neighbors.

Several Primary Election runoff candidates had the opportunity to introduce themselves on Monday. Participating candidates included Matt Beebe and Steve Allison running for District 121 State Representative, and Matt McCall and Mary Street Wilson running for District 21 U.S. Representative. All four candidates did an excellent job of informing us on why they are seeking office and what they wish to accomplish. If you were not able to make the meeting last on Monday, there will be another opportunity to meet with the candidates. The Northeast Neighborhood Alliance will host a candidates' forum on April 16th, in place of the regularly scheduled District 10 Community Meeting. District 10 will host the meetings in May and June.

Early Voting for the Runoff Election begins on Monday, May 14th and ends on Friday, May 18th.  The Runoff Election will take place on May 22nd. As a reminder, you can vote in this election even if you did not participate in the Primary Election. Check your county elections website for voting information and locations.

At Monday's meeting, I had the opportunity to introduce two gentlemen who will be serving District 10 - Raul Ubides and Officer Richard Grant. Raul joined our staff as a member of our Neighborhood Engagement Team and Officer Grant is District 10's newest SAFFE Officer. An updated SAFFE Officer map can be found on our website. Thank you all for being so courteous and welcoming them to the District 10 team.

This Wednesday, March 21st, the District 10 Field Office will be distributing free mosquito dunks. These will be distributed on a first-come, first -served basis.

We'll be revealing our 2018 Fiesta medal soon, so keep an eye out for our reveal on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. Be sure to mark your calendars for April 10th! We'll be bringing all of our favorite aspects of Fiesta (free food, entertainment, and medals) and information from SA MetroHealth, TCI, SASpeakUp, SAPD, SAFD, SAWS, and CPS to District 10. Time and location information can be found on a flyer below.

As always, thank you for being active community members and leaders here in District 10, and do not hesitate to contact our office if we can be of any assistance to you.

- Clayton

Open Surveys

District 10 Surveys

Here in District 10, we're already looking "down the road" for repairs and upgrades. We've been hard at work reviewing and tweaking the 2018 street repair schedule, but we are always on the lookout for the big projects that can truly transform District 10. We've started a running list of future bond projects for consideration, but we need your help in guiding us to what District 10 needs most. Please help us determine what your priorities are for the future 2022- 2027 Bond by completing this survey. It's not too early for us to start this process at our level.

We'd like to gauge our neighbors on their desire for a homestead tax exemption, for them to assign a monetary value to what they consider relief, and what services they are OK with being reduced in the City Budget in order to receive a homestead exemption. If a resident is not willing to cut services in order to receive a tax break, that's valuable information. If a resident considers an extra $100 in tax reduction a real relief, that's also valuable information. The results of this survey will help guide our office as we push forward with tax relief options for our residents. Please participate in our survey, here.

Citywide Surveys

SA Climate Ready is a City initiative aiming to improve the quality of life of all residents of San Antonio and make the city and its people better prepared to face expected changes in climate. This initiative will explore both mitigation strategies, aiming to reduce or prevent the emission of GHGs, and adaptation strategies aiming to prepare the community, municipal government operations, and other key sectors for the anticipated impacts of climate change. An essential part of this process is to engage our community to better understand the collective vision and priorities of our citizens. This helps ensure that the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan will serve to benefit all San Antonians. The Office of Sustainability has created a survey focused on plan vision and priorities. Meet Our Staff

My name is Raul Ubides, and it is a privilege to be the newest member of Councilman Clayton Perry's staff.

I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. When I was three years old, we moved away from Puerto Rico. My mother joined the Army as a nurse, and my family traveled around the country with her. In 2005, my mother retired from the Army and our family settled right here in District 10.

I received all of my secondary education here in San Antonio. I first went to Hallmark College to earn my Associates in Applied Science in order to become a medical assistant. After earning my Associate's Degree, I worked as a medical assistant for 8 years. While working in the medical field, I developed my passion for helping people. However, there was only so much that could be done in private medicine, which is why I decided to work towards my Bachelors in Business with a Minor in Health Care Management from Strayer University. Soon after earning my Bachelor's Degree, I began working on my Masters in Public Administration from UTSA. I am currently two semesters away from graduating.

I have previously worked for the City of San Antonio's Metropolitan Health District. I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to work for Councilman Perry as a Neighborhood Engagement Officer. I am excited to have the opportunity to work alongside our neighbors in District 10, and I am confident that together we can create a better community for all.

Some of you know that I have taken a special interest in ensuring that members of the disabled community are taken into account by the City of San Antonio. After Harvey, I requested the City to ensure that our emergency management plans included their feedback and consideration. I'm so pleased that the City is paying attention - above is the announcement of a schedule of community meetings with the Disability Access Office and Transportation and Capital Improvements to gather feedback on what can be improved or implemented. I highly encourage you share this information with your neighborhoods to ensure that everyone knows about this set of meetings. For more information, click here.
